an apartment fire in concord this morning. kpix 5 reporter elissa harrington tells us why investigators think a fireplace was to blame. >> reporter: a scary way to wake up for a woman and two daughters, among six families rescued by firefighters when the neighbor's unit went up in flames. >> i opened my door. we live on the second floor and saw this huge fire right in front of us. >> reporter: the two alarm fire started just before 7:00 in an upstairs apartment on tioga street in concord. flames burned to the downstairs unit up to the attic. you can see the entire roof is missing. firefighters say the woman who lives here was just trying to stay warm on a chilly morning. >> this is a gas fireplace. she had issues friday night, shut it down, tried to restart it this morning because of the cold weather and the fire ignited possibly into the walls behind the fireplace. >> reporter: nobody was hurt and the flames were contained to two apartments. it's not over for residents like clark who can't go home. power was shut off for safety. >> no water, no power

localized wind gusts in the hills, but cooler temperatures. bundle up, 46 in concord. 48 in san jose and 46 degrees right now in santa rosa. here are your weather headlines. overnight temperatures mainly in the mid 30s to mid 40s. we have a warming trend just around the corner. beginning tomorrow, as those winds continue to die down, it should bump up temperatures and the warmer weather continues into the workweek. sunshine, mild, warmer, upper 50s to low 60s and plenty of sunshine for the final half of the weekend. it's because of a ridge of high pressure continues to build. so we aren't seeing any rain at all. definitely you can see in future cast, but we are talking beyond that. in the next seven days, it looks dry in our forecast. possibly by next sunday, we could see a possible change in the weather. for now, we are looking high and dry. pinpoint forecast overnight lows, once again cool tonight. and the winds will slowly die down, even though we could see gusts more than 20 miles per hour. very localized. 38 in concord. 39 overnight in san rafael. 45 in san francisco and 45 degrees out

with a crash. on treat boulevard, watch for slow traffic coming from concord to walnut creek. after that, though, the traffic is doing well. if you get on the freeway in walnut creek, the traffic is better. westbound 80, we had reports of 80 westbound, involving a motorcycle but the chp is not reporting it. in richmond near central, we're trying to find it. hopefully it's not there. but we'll keep an eye on it for. and the tell's slide area. highway 1 at devil's side -- devil slide area. highway 1, devil's slide. they are blocking a lane there. there's only two lanes there. so they have to do traffic control. let's go to the toll plaza, the traffic is backed you for about a 15-minute minute delay before you make it on the span itself. this morning's commute in san jose, that's off to a good start. northbound 280 traffic is doing well. all lanes have just reopened at devil's slide. so that's good news. let's go to steve. >>> colder this morning. mostly clear. a few low clouds around. yesterday was coastal variety. it's colder this morning. it's going to get colder. a lot of sunshine. incr

's this time and concord. a 14 year-old boy is in the hospital this morning after by car while crossing solano way in concord. it happened yesterday are around 1:30 p.m.. if you know the area of this is solano and grant rate near 680. authorities said the boy and a walking in a crosswalk on salon away when a toyota saigon struck him. police said the driver is not believe seven drunk or speeding at the time of the crash. the boy is now being treated for life-threatening injuries at children's hospital in oakland. >> president obama is expected to announce in a state of the union address tonight that 34,000 troops will be able to come home from afghanistan next year. at the half the u.s. troops currently in afghanistan. the decision marks the next phase of the president's plan to in the u.s.-led war in afghanistan by the end of 2014. wilson of president obama will focus on boosting job reducing gun violence and revamping immigration. present obama will then travel three states over three days starting tomorrow to drum up support supports our policy proposals. apple ceo tim cook will be among tho

is 46 and concord is 45 and los gatos 42 and gilroy at 38 degrees. we going to have partly sunny conditions and you can see today and cooler weather and a stray shower possible but wet on tuesday with snow levels down to possibly 2,500'. the high pressure and the cold front is pushed out of the way and it is a long cold front. today we have cooler weather and more humidity with the wind and tomorrow the cold front comes through with a sharp lifting mechanism creating showers. tomorrow morning, a few showers are possible and headed after the commute the rain is in the not bay and moving through the heart of the day in the mid-morning and noon in the south bay. by 2:00 it is gone. however, there are more showers tuesday evening through the north bay and the heart of the bay and by 11:00 it is gone. we will get quarter to possibly .5" in our higher elevations. today's temperature at the coast if the low 40's, low 50's and mid-to-upper 50's for the rest of us with temperatures coolest tomorrow in the upper 40's to low 50's and we rebound but stay in the 50's for the better part of fo

. but the temperatures are staying very cool. 51 degrees in concord. 49 in santa rosa. 50 in san jose. and 51 degrees in san francisco. throughout the afternoon, the temperatures stay cool. and mostly cloudy skies along the coastline. and the clouds break up inside the bay. and partly cloudy in the afternoon in many of the valleys. tonight the storm clouds roll in and a chance of showers developing late tonight and early tomorrow morning. numbers are in the 30s and 40s. a very cold system dropping in off the gulf of alaska and you can see the low making its way in our direction. and lots of cold air for tomorrow and it could bring the snow level down to 2,000 feet. especially overnight on tuesday, into wednesday morning. around the state today, some 50s and upper 60s toward the fresno area. here is the computer model with the latest run on the storm system approaching the coastline. late tonight. you can see beginning to drop in to bring scattered showers. and look for the commute tomorrow. a pretty good band of energy romming through -- rolling throug
